Grand Rapids Hoops News Release
Immanuel McElroy scored 26 second-half points, but it was not enough as the Grand Rapids Hoops fell 117-107 at the hands of the Gary Steelheads Saturday night at the Genesis Convention Center. McElroy led the Hoops with 28 points and eight rebounds, but they were only able to corral one of seven quarter points on the night.
Grand Rapids (17-19) committed 30 turnovers, and they also were forced to play much of the game without the services of their second-leading scorer, Alex Scales. Jerald Honeycutt contributed 19 points in the loss, while Kareem Reid added 14 points and a team-high six assists.
Gary (17-18) was paced by an outstanding all-around effort by Silas Mills. Mills led the Steelheads with 27 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. Former-Hoop Galen Young added 21 points, while Nate Blessen registered 18 points.
The first half ended with Tim Kisner connecting on a 40-foot prayer as time expired. The three pointer gave the Hoops the quarter victory and cut the Steelheads' lead to 53-52. Kisner finished the first half with 14 points, including three three-pointers. He would not score in the second half. McElroy struggled mightily, connecting on just 1-6 field goals for two points heading into the break.
Young and Blessen stepped up for the Steelheads in the second half, while as a team, Gary connected on their last 11 free throw attempts to seal the victory. Grand Rapids never made a serious threat at the lead, as Gary won for the first time in five games.
The same two teams square off once again on Tuesday evening at the Genesis Convention Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. EST.
