Grand Rapids Hoops News Release
The Grand Rapids HOOPS continued their recent struggles on the road, dropping a 99-91 decision at the hands of the Gary Steelheads on Tuesday night at the Genesis Convention Center. Grand Rapids had an opportunity to take the fourth quarter point, but Silas Mills was able to lead the Steelheads back to take an important six of seven quarter points. The two teams are currently in a battle for the final playoff spot in the American Conference.
The HOOPS were able to force the Steelheads into 32 turnovers in the game, but they continued their recent shooting woes. Grand Rapids' (17-20) dismal shooting effort (35-89 FG, .393) came in the absence of their second leading scorer, Alex Scales. Scales missed his second consecutive game due to a wrist injury. As a team, Grand Rapids connected on a season-low two three-pointers as they dropped their third consecutive road contest.
Jerald Honeycutt led the HOOPS with 19 points (7-21 FG), while Immanuel McElroy also contributed 18 points (7-14 FG). Olden Polynice registered ten points and a team-high ten rebounds. However, on the night, Grand Rapids was outrebounded by the Steelheads by an astonishing 63-42 margin.
Mills was a large part of the rebounding advantage for Gary (18-19), hauling in a game-high 20 rebounds, while also scoring 20 points (8-13 FG). Former-HOOP Galen Young also had a big game for the Steelheads, scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Darrin Hancock was a key contributor late in the game, putting in eight of his 16 points in the fourth quarter.
Grand Rapids next hits the floor on Friday afternoon in a Valentine's Day matinee against the Rockford Lightning. Tip-off is scheduled for 11 a.m. EST.
