Grand Rapids Evens Up Series with Lightning

The Grand Rapids Hoops topped the Rockford Lightning 128-120 at the Rockford MetroCenter Wednesday afternoon to square up the best-of-five American Conference Finals at one a piece. Led by a quartet of twenty-point scorers, Grand Rapids built a lead as big as 15 points and held on for the important victory.

The teams got off to a quick start in the game, putting up a combined 83 points in the first quarter, despite playing a overtime thriller the evening prior. Grand Rapids used a 29-19 third quarter output to take a 98-89 lead into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, the Hoops extended their lead even further, before the Lightning staged a late comeback to cut the lead down to three points with three minutes remaining. However, Grand Rapids' Kareem Reid was able to connect on 7-8 free throw attempts down the stretch to secure the victory for Hoops.

Alex Scales led Grand Rapids with 26 points (10-19 FG) and nine rebounds, while Olden Polynice added a season-high 25 points (12-19 FG) and eight rebounds of his own. The Hoops also received 22 points from Immanuel McElroy and Jerald Honeycutt. McElroy also added a game-high 12 rebounds.

Rockford was paced by Danny Johnson, who registered 27 points (10-22 FG), and Ronnie Fields, who chipped in 21 points (9-20 FG).

The two teams will now take a six-day break before continuing the series on Tuesday, March 18 at the DeltaPlex Arena in Grand Rapids. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST.
