
Gordon Dominates, Offense Explodes, M-Braves Top Smokies 10-3

PEARL, MS - RHP Tanner Gordon tied a career-high with seven innings, and the Mississippi Braves (48-56, 19-16) blasted three homers and picked up 10 hits in their 10-3 win over the Tennessee Smokies (56-48, 19-16) on Wednesday night at Smokies Stadium.
Gordon gave up three runs with no walks and three strikeouts. The right-hander used just 75 pitches. He went seven innings for the fourth time in his career and the second time this season. Gordon is 6-4 with a 6.22 ERA in 16 starts for the M-Braves.
Justyn-Henry Malloy cranked a two-run homer in the opening frame to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The homer was Malloy's third since being promoted from High-A Rome. The outfielder went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
In the second, Landon Stephens hit his first Double-A home run to left field to make it 3-1. He was promoted from High-A Rome on Friday, August 5.
In the fifth, the M-Braves broke open the game with five runs. Riley Delgado doubled down the right field line to score two runs. Jordan Cowan bounced a ball off the pitcher that rolled all the way down the right field line for a double to score two more runs. The M-Braves led 8-2 through five innings.
Delgado went 1-for-3 with two RBI and two walks. The infielder ranks eighth in the Southern League with a .278 batting average.
In the seventh, Javier Valdes hammered a two-run shot off the scoreboard to extend the lead to 10-2. Valdes homered in back-to-back games after his promotion for High-A Rome. In two games, Valdes is 4-for-7 with two home runs and three RBI.
Cody Milligan and Andrew Moritz each picked up two hits. Milligan went 2-for-5 in the leadoff spot, and Moritz went 2-for-4 in the nine-spot to set the table for the offense.
LHP Jake Higginbotham and RHP Kyle Wilcox each added scoreless innings to close out the 10-3 win.
The third game of the series is on Thursday at Smokies Stadium. RHP Alan Rangel (4-5, 5.38) will make the start for Mississippi against RHP Riley Thompson (0-4, 6.68) for Tennessee. The first pitch is at 6:15 pm CT, with coverage starting at 6:00 pm CT on 103.9 WYAB, First Pitch App and MiLB.tv.
