Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport (16 - 17) captured its third-consecutive win on Wednesday night after taking down the first-place Plymouth Pilgrims (19 - 15) for the second time in three days by a score of 5-3. Nic Enright picked up the win for the Gulls giving up just one run on nine hits in 6.0 innings of work. Nate Wrighter earned his league-leading eighth save of the season, shutting down Plymouth in the top of the ninth.
After Plymouth struck first with one run in the top of the second both Stevie Mangrum and Jayson Gonzalez took Cameron Junker deep to give Newport a 2-1 lead. Newport added one more run in the third on a timely two-out, RBI double from Kody Hoese. The Gulls made it a 5-1 game in the very next inning after Gonzalez belted his third home run of the season, second of the game, over the fence for a two-run shot.
The Pilgrims got to within two after scoring twice in the top of the seventh on RBI hits from Isaiah Cullum and Hernan Sardinas, but it was Jeremiah Burke who stopped the bleeding and allowed no runs in an inning and a third of work to set up Wrighter in the ninth.
Newport will be back in action on Friday night when they face off against the second-place Mystic Schooners (19 - 15) for the fifth time this season. First pitch from Cardines Field is set for 6:35 p.m. on Mark Weed Memorial Scholarship Night where 500 Newport Gulls Team Posters will be given away at the ballpark courtesy of Regine Printing.
