Gomez, Redfish Defeat Juice

July 2, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Redfish and the Bradenton Juice squared off in the 4th installment of the Sunshine State Rivarly Series, presented by Fairchild Roofing. The Redfish moved to double digits in the win column with a great performance by starter Ricardo Gomez in a 7-5 victory.

It was another pitcher's duel early between Gomez (1-1) and Juice starter Lavelle Morgan (4-3). The Juice got on the scoreboard as Julius Thames blooped a double and was sacrificed over to third. Eddie Kim plated Thames on an RBI single and the Juice took a 1-0 lead. Morgan kept it that way as he set down the Redfish in order in the first 2 innings.

The Redfish changed that in the third as William Plaza singled to left and Mike Muscato ripped a double down the third baseline. Millard Dawson put a bunt down and forced the throw to first as Plaza scampered home to tie the game, 1-1. The Juice quickly jumped back up with a solo homerun to left off the bat of Mikela Olsen to take a 2-1 lead that held until the 6th inning.

Dawson laid down a bunt single to lead off the 6th and Billy Kovatch blooped a single to center. After squaring around to bunt on the first three pitches he saw, Redfish shortstop Jose Gutierrez pulled the bat back and ripped a double over the head of his Juice counterpart, Brenan Herrera, that rolled all the way to the wall and gave the Redfish 3-2 lead. The Redfish brought 12 batters to the plate in the inning and plated 4 more runs on 4 more hits to take a commanding 7-2 lead.

The Redfish handed the game to their bullpen as Gomez finished the night with 6.0 strong innings. Gomez allowed 2 ER on 7 hits, walked two and struck out 8. New Redfish reliever Celson Polanco made his Redfish debut and it was a beauty as he struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 8th inning. Andy Polk, another new Redfish reliever, ran into a bit of trouble in the top of the 9th as he surrendered a 2-out 2-run homerun to Al Corbeil. Aristedes Almenar came on and shut the door on the Juice as he picked up his 5th save of the season and the Redfish took home a 7-5 win.

The Redfish will take on the Juice in game two of the 4th installment of the Sunshine State Rivarly Series, presented by Fairchild Roofing tomorrow night, July 3rd. LHP Daniel Chaffardet takes to the hill for the Redfish against Juice RHP Travis Kane. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
