June 12, 2009 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Alex Goligoski (goh-lih-GAW-skee) became the second former Stampede player to win a Stanley Cup championship when the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals Friday night in Detroit. They become the first team since 1972 to win a Game 7 on the road. The Penguins rallied from a 3-2 series deficit to pull off the upset, denying the Red Wings their second straight title. It marks the first title since 1992 for the Penguins.

Although Goligoski did not appear in the finals, his name will be engraved on the holiest of all trophies after appearing in 45 games during the regular season. Players who play in at least 41 regular season games or 1 Stanley Cup Final game have their names engraved on the cup.

Goligoski, who played in Sioux Falls during the 2003-04 season, posted 20 points (6g, 14a) in 45 games with the Penguins this season. His 20 points ranked third amongst rookie defenseman in the NHL. He was called up from the American Hockey League at the beginning of the playoffs and posted one assist in two games against the Washington Capitals in the first round. Chad LaRose was the first former Stampede player to win the Stanley Cup when the Carolina Hurricanes won the title back in 2006.
