Goaltenders Taking Spotlight Early
November 11, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
During the 2002-2003 Central Hockey League season, goaltenders managed to record a total of 55 shutouts during the 512-game season, averaging one shutout per 9.31 contests to establish an all-time CHL high. This season, goaltenders have already posted 13 shutouts through 84 games, for an average of one per every 6.46 CHL games.
In the past week, netminders have enjoyed a total of eight shutouts, with three coming on November 8th alone. 15 of the CHL's 17 clubs have already been involved in shutout games, with only the Lubbock Cotton Kings and Wichita Thunder exempt, while a pair teams have already participated in three shutouts. Oklahoma City leads the CHL with three shutout victories, Indianapolis has a record of 2-1-0 in shutout games, and both Austin and Fort Worth have been on the losing end of two shutouts. Three CHL contests have ended with scores of 1-0 this season, including San Angelo's 1-0 win at Corpus Christi November 8th, Indianapolis' 1-0 home overtime victory over Odessa on November 1st, and Oklahoma City's 1-0 home shootout win over Colorado on November 9th. Last season, a total of six CHL games ended with similar scores of 1-0, with five ending in regulation and one decided in overtime.
Only two goaltenders have multiple shutout efforts this season. Oklahoma City's Sean Connors earned his two shutouts in back to back road games, making 25 saves in a 4-0 win at Fort Worth November 1st, then stopping all 38 Indianapolis shots in a 3-0 win November 5th. Ken Carroll of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs posted his pair of home shutouts on October 25th with a 30 save 2-0 win over New Mexico and a 33 save effort in a 3-0 victory over Fort Worth November 6th.
Other CHL goaltenders posting goose-eggs on the scoreboard this season include Laredo's David Guerrera and Marco Emond, Indianapolis' Jeff Sanger (just called up to Norfolk of the American Hockey League) and Brent Zelenewich, Corpus Christi's Brent Belecki, Oklahoma City's Boyd Ballard, San Angelo's Scott Reid, Odessa's Mark Cairns, and Rio Grande Valley's Jeff Levy.
Pointstreak Performance of the Week
Laredo left winger Jason Spence and his Bucks teammates were in danger of losing just their second game of the season on Friday, November 7th, trailing the Corpus Christi Rayz 4-3 after two periods of play in Laredo. Nova Scotia native Spence sparked the Bucks to a four-goal outburst in the third period, scoring once and adding two assists, as Laredo claimed a 7-4 victory and improved their record to a CHL-best 7-1-0. Laredo also won the next night to move to 8-1-0.
