Goalkeeper Austin Pack Returns for 2021 Season

(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) - Charlotte Independence announced today that goalkeeper Austin Pack has signed a new contract and will be returning to the club for the 2021 season, pending league and federation approval.

"Charlotte is like a second home to me," said Pack. "I can't express how excited I am to be returning for a second season with the Independence."

Pack, 27, first signed with the Independence on February 10, 2020 after spending the previous two seasons with Portland Timbers 2 (2018) and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (2019).

Prior to making the move to the USL Championship, Pack played two seasons for Puerto Rico FC (2016-17), where he made 11 starts and recorded two shutouts during the 2017 NASL season.

"I am delighted to welcome Austin back and feel we have a top goalkeeping tandem in the USL Championship," said Charlotte Independence General Manager and Head Coach Mike Jeffries. "Austin was a positive addition to our group last year in his daily work rate and mentality for the position. With his experience in both the NASL and USL, Austin has already proven his level in the league and earned the confidence of his teammates and coaching staff."

Pack played collegiately for the Charlotte 49ers from 2012-15, notching 15 shutouts in 42 appearances. In the summer of 2015, the goalkeeper joined USL League Two side Carolina Dynamo where he made eight appearances.

"Playing at American Legion Memorial Stadium this year, close to the city, will be special for both the players and fans," added Pack. "I'm really looking forward to experiencing that new environment."

Pack joins Jake Areman, Clay Dimick, Junior Etou, Enzo Martinez, Brandon Miller, Marcelo Palomino (on loan from Houston Dynamo FC), Hugh Roberts, and Valentin Sabella (currently loaned to Cancun FC) on the list of players confirmed for the 2021 season, as the club continues to negotiate with additional players.

The Independence will make the 2021 campaign its first season at the brand new American Legion Memorial Stadium. The $40 million entire rebuild of the historic venue which began last September is close to completion and is set to open a new chapter for the Jacks.
