Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Elvin Ramirez pitched well over 5.1 innings and three Sand Gnats had a pair of hits as Savannah defeated the Rome Braves 4-2 on Sunday afternoon before 1,958 spectators at Historic Grayson Stadium, the largest Sunday crowd since the start of the 2005 season.
Ramirez (2-1) limited the Braves to four hits and allowed just one run to earn his second win and a series split for the Sand Gnats. Jose Bierd pitched a perfect ninth to earn his third save.
The Braves had a chance to tie it in the seventh, trailing 4-2 with two aboard and Nick Waechter on the mound. Waechter balked, allowing Michael Fisher to move to third and Jason Heyward to reach second. Waechter struck out Cody Johnson on the next pitch to end the threat.
The Sand Gnats began the scoring in the third when Greg Veloz grounded out, scoring Eigsti and moving Daniel Stegall to third. Bouchard gave the Sand Gnats a 2-0 lead with a single to center.
Savannah added a run in the third on a single from Eigsti that scored Jordan Abuzzo. In the sixth, Michael Hernandez led off with a double to right and scored when Jose Jimenez doubled to right for his team-leading 14th RBI.
Eric Barrett (1-2) was tagged for 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits in 6.0 innings.
The Sand Gnats continue a 10-game homestand on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Hickory Crawdads visit Historic Grayson Stadium. Left-hander Angel Calero (0-3, 3.54) will start for Savannah. Tuesday is the Lou Brissie Jersey Retirement Cermony. Before the game, Lou Brissie's No. 3 Savannah Indians Jersey will be retired. The first 1,000 fans will receive a replica t-shirt jersey courtesy of the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society. For tickets and more information call 912-351-9150 or visit www.sandgnats.com
