CHANTILLY, VA -- There were signs of 2007 as Amber Jackson and Oli Keohohou each hit home runs while Keohohou hit the final home run of the home season for the Glory who swept Akron with a 4-1 victory on Monday night.
The win is the first time this season the Glory swept a four-game series. Jackson's home run in the second inning tied the game after Akron took their first lead of the series in the first inning. It was Jackson's fifth home run and second in as many nights.
Keohohou delivered the only other Glory hit of the game in the sixth inning with a three-run home run that glanced off the glove of left fielder India Chiles. The Glory did not leave a runner on base in this game, just one night after leaving 13 runners on base and the bases loaded twice.
Keohohou's home run in the sixth was a precursor to an amazing catch made by LaDonia Hughes in the top of the seventh to keep Akron from making it a one-run game. With one out and the speedy Norelle Dickson on first, Kristen Butler hit a high fly ball to dead center. Hughes leaped at the right time and grabbed the ball back from over the fence. She fell to the ground but fans were still unsure whether Hughes made the catch. Picking herself up off the ground, Hughes then fired the ball to first and Dickson slid in just ahead of the throw. After the grab, Hughes was mobbed by her teammates and after Taryne Mowatt got the final out, she went out to high-five Hughes.
The Glory will now head to Lowell, Mass. to take on the New England Riptide starting Thursday to close out the regular season. The Glory will then participate in the NPF Championship Series beginning August 22 in Kimberly, Wisc.
