Gladiators Suffer First Loss

NEW ORLEANS - The Cleveland Gladiators suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night, falling to the New Orleans VooDoo 63-24 in front of 13,027 in New Orleans Arena. The Gladiators head into the Bye Week at 3-1, while the VooDoo improves to 3-1.

New Orleans capitalized on numerous Gladiators turnovers and missed opportunities. Raymond Philyaw and backup quarterback Jose Davis were each intercepted twice in the loss. Davis replaced Philyaw, who left the game in the third quarter with a sore right hand.

Danny Wimprine led the VooDoo attack, finishing 19-of-26 for 235 yards and four touchdown passes in the win. His favorite target was James Jordan, who led the VooDoo receivers with 11 catches for a team-high 113 yards. Jordan and Tyronne Jones each recorded two receiving touchdowns, while Javarus Dudley added one.

Former Ohio State quarterback Steve Bellisari relieved Wimprine in the fourth quarter, completing 3-of-4 passes for 32 yards and a touchdown.

Prior to exiting the game, Philyaw completed 15-of-29 passes for 146 yards in the loss. He did not complete a touchdown pass, but did rush for a score in the second quarter. Davis completed 6-of-10 passes for 115 yards, two touchdowns and the two interceptions in his Gladiators debut.

Robert Redd led all receivers with 13 catches for a game-high 131 yards receiving. Cornelius Bonner was the recipient of both of Davis' touchdown passes. Bonner finished with the two grabs for 77 yards and both scores.
