Cleveland Gladiators News Release
TAMPA - The Cleveland Gladiators fell to the Tampa Bay Storm 58-48 in front of 15,976 fans at the St. Pete Times Forum on Friday night. Cleveland (7-5) saw their three game win streak end while the Storm (6-6) has now won three straight games.
Torrance Marshall's two-yard touchdown run with 6:44 in the game broke a 41-41 tie and Phil Glover's net recovery on the ensuing kickoff gave the ball back to the Storm at the Cleveland nine yard line. Two plays later, Tyrone Timmons touchdown reception gave Tampa Bay a 14-point lead.
Trailing 55-41 with just over a minute to play, Raymond Philyaw found Willis Marshall for an eight-yard touchdown pass and a successful extra point brought the Gladiators to within seven points.
Storm kicker Seth Marler closed out the scoring with a 23-yard field goal with 13 seconds left, sealing the victory for the Storm.
Philyaw finished 21-of-27 passing for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Marshall added three catches for 22 yards, one touchdown and one rushing touchdown.
Needing just nine receiving yards entering the game, Otis Amey finished with game-high 106 yards on the night, cracking the 1,000-yard mark for the second consecutive season. Joining teammate Robert Redd, the Gladiators now have two 1,000-yard receivers in the same season - a feat that has never occurred in franchise history.
The AFL's leading rusher Marlion Jackson carried the ball six times for 18 yards and two touchdowns.
For the Storm, Brett Dietz completed 28-of-43 for 297 yards and six touchdowns. Timmons grabbed seven passes for 69 yards and three touchdowns.
