The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that they have released defenseman Mike Looby. Originally signed by the Gladiators on June 25, 2009, Looby becomes a free agent.
Looby played in 75 regular season games and five playoff games last season splitting time with the Dayton Bombers and the Gladiators. He finished the season with 12 points, combining for 4 goals and eight assists and had a -13 plus/minus rating.
The 24-year-old Brampton, Ontario native spent five seasons in the OHL splitting time with the Brampton Battalion, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, the Plymouth Whalers and the Kingston Frontenacs before making his professional debut with the Laredo Bucks in the 2006 playoffs. He spent two more seasons in the CHL, playing with the Arizona Sundogs, the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and Tulso Oilers amassing 38 points in 124 regular season games before coming to the ECHL.
Looby appeared in all five post season games with the Gladiators last season recording no points and no penalty minutes.
Began in 1988-89 with five teams playing in four states, the Premier 'AA' Hockey League has grown into a coast-to-coast league that is the third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League. The ECHL averaged 4,174 per game last season, marking the fourth year in row and the 16th time in the last 18 years that the league has averaged over 4,000 fans. The league has drawn over four million fans each of the last five years and 11 times in the past 12 seasons.
