Gladiators Defeat Shock, Earn First Win

Spokane, WA - Brent Holmes' 56-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 1.6 seconds left in the game gave the Cleveland Gladiators their first win of the 2010 season, as they knocked off the Spokane Shock, 72-68 on Saturday night in Washington. The Gladiators improved to 1-3, while the Shock evened their record at 2-2.

Shock quarterback Kyle Rowley connected with Raul Vijil on a four-yard strike with 8.2 seconds left in the game, giving the Shock a 68-65 lead. Holmes scored on the ensuing kickoff, giving the Gladiators the edge and the eventual victory.

In the win, Gladiators ironman Victor Williams recorded three touchdowns - one rushing, one receiving and one interception return for a touchdown. Quarterback John Dutton completed 25-of-39 passes for 285 yards and six touchdowns, including the score to Williams.

Ben Nelson led the Gladiators scoring attack with four receiving touchdowns on seven catches, totaling 129 yards. Holmes also grabbed six passes for 64 yards, in addition to his game-winning return.

For the Shock, Rowley finished 30-of-45 for a game-high 375 yards and nine touchdowns. His favorite target was Huey Whittaker, who caught 11 passes for a game-best 149 yards and three touchdowns. Rowley threw touchdown passes to five different receivers.
