Milwaukee Mustangs News Release
Against one of the best defenses in the Arena Football League the Iron came up short Saturday night, scoring just 67 points in their first loss of the season at the VBC Arena in Huntsville, AL, losing to the Vipers 67-75.
The Vipers allowed 369 yards and gained just 324 yards on their own but were still able to hold the league's leading offense. The Iron came into the game leading the AFL with 70.3 points per game and earned their second-most yards this season in the loss.
Alabama, led by quarterback Kevin Eakin and his seven touchdowns and 241 yards, used all of their weapons in order to defeat the Iron. Fullback Dan Alexander, who leads the league in rush yards and rushing touchdowns, was held to just eight rushing yards and two touchdowns. However, the Vipers used a sneak attack in the backfield, handing the ball off to wide receiver Larry Shipp who rushed for 68 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver CJ Johnson was the biggest offensive threat for the Vipers as he caught seven passes for three touchdowns and 91 yards.
The Iron were led by wide receiver Nate Forse who tallied 207 yards on 15 receptions and four touchdowns, all season highs for the Iron utility man. Milwaukee quarterback Chris Greisen notched 360 yards and tied his season high with nine touchdowns in the Iron loss. Iron wide receiver Damian Harrell came within 10 yards of setting the AFL's all-time receiving yards record after catching seven passes for 96 yards and three touchdowns. Harrell now needs just 13 receptions and 10 yards to be the AFL's all-time leading receiver in every major receiving category.
On special teams, kick returner Carlton Brown returned eight kickoffs for 126 yards and the Iron's first kick return for a touchdown. On defense, Khreem Smith tallied two sacks in the game for the Iron, totaling 14 yards for loss.
The Iron scored the most points in one quarter this season when they had 33 points in the second quarter tonight. The Iron led at half for the third time this season and also fumbled three times for a season high.
Wide receiver Tiger Jones had nine receptions for 63 yards and two touchdowns tonight while fullback Tyre Young followed up his outstanding game last week with just four yards on three carries this week.
The Iron return home for a Midwest Division rivalry matchup with the undefeated Chicago Rush on Friday, May 7th at 7:30 pm at the Bradley Center. Tickets are still available for the Friday night matchup and can be purchased online, by calling Ticketmaster or by visiting the Bradley Center box office.
