San Jose Giants News Release
STOCKTON - The Stockton Ports scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back in a 10-1 blowout victory over the San Jose Giants on Sunday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark. After winning the first three games of the series, the Giants were unable to complete the sweep in suffering their worst loss of the season. The loss snapped San Jose's four-game win streak and dropped their record to 46-28.
Brock Bond (2-for-5), Chris Lofton (2-for-4) and Myles Schroder (2-for-4, 2B) finished with two hits apiece to lead the Giants offensively in defeat.
San Jose's only run of the contest came in the top of the first inning. Bond started the game with a single before advancing to second on a wild pick-off throw. After Lofton singled to move Bond to third, Angel Villalona delivered an RBI groundout to make it 1-0.
Stockton though responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first off of Giants starter Clayton Blackburn. Addison Russell was hit by a pitch with one out before stealing second. After Max Muncy drew a walk, Tony Thompson singled to center to score the first run of the inning. B.A. Vollmuth followed with an RBI double into the left field corner to give the Ports a 2-1 lead. Blackburn recovered to strikeout the next batter, Antonio Lamas, but Rashun Dixon then hit a grounder to shortstop that was thrown away by Bobby Haney for an error. The miscue allowed both Thompson and Vollmuth to score for a 4-1 advantage.
Stockton extended their lead in the bottom of the second as Myrio Richard led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Russell's one-out single.
The Ports then knocked Blackburn out of the game with a three-run bottom of the fourth. Consecutive one-out singles from Richard and Bobby Crocker was followed by a Russell sacrifice fly. Muncy then belted a two-run home run to deep right center field to increase the margin to 8-1. The home run was Muncy's league-leading 19th of the season.
Blackburn (3-4) allowed a season-high eight runs (six earned) on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. He walked one and struck out three.
Jason Forjet tossed 3 1/3 shutout innings of long relief for the Giants, but San Jose didn't score again after the top of the first. Stockton pushed the lead to 10-1 in the bottom of the eighth when Russell smacked a two-run homer to left off of Kelvin Marte.
Raul Alcantara (1-0) picked-up the win in his California League debut after allowing just one unearned run on four hits over five innings. He walked two and did not record a strikeout.
The Giants had at least one baserunner in every inning except the top of the third. San Jose was 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left 11 on base.
