San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants dropped their sixth consecutive game with a 5-4, 10-inning loss to the Visalia Rawhide on Tuesday night at Excite Ballpark. Visalia's Junior Franco produced a tiebreaking RBI single in the top of the 10th and the Giants were unable to take advantage of their free runner in the bottom of the inning to suffer the series-opening setback. The last four losses of San Jose's (46-36, 6-10 second half) six-game skid have all been one-run defeats.
Victor Bericoto and Grant McCray homered for the Giants in the loss. San Jose though went hitless in 11 at-bats with runners in scoring position, left 13 on base and struck out a season-high tying 18 times.
Tuesday was a bullpen game for the Giants with Esmerlin Vinicio making his second start of the season. Vinicio began his night by striking out two hitters in a 1-2-3 top of the first before San Jose took the early lead in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Carter Williams was hit by a pitch and then Bericoto stepped to the plate and blasted a 451-foot two-run home run to deep left center. It was Bericoto's eighth home run of the season as the Giants jumped out in front by a 2-0 margin.
The lead was short-lived though as Visalia immediately answered with a three-run top of the second against Vinicio. Deyvison De Los Santos led off with a single before a one-out walk to JJ D'Orazio. Juan Corniel then knocked in a run with an RBI double before Jacen Roberson's bloop single into left center plated two more for a 3-2 Rawhide advantage.
Ofelky Peralta relieved Vinicio to begin the top of the third and retired the first five batters of his outing before Visalia added to their lead in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Roberson doubled and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jean Walters then singled sharply into right on the eighth pitch of his at-bat to score Roberson as the Rawhide extended their lead to 4-2.
San Jose though came back with a two-run bottom of the fifth to tie the game. McCray led off with an opposite field home run to left. The solo shot was McCray's 13th round-tripper of the season.
Two batters later, Bericoto singled before Riley Mahan was hit by a pitch. Hayden Cantrelle's grounder to shortstop then skipped under the glove of Jordan Lawlar for an error as Bericoto scored to tie the contest 4-4.
The Giants had an opportunity to take back the lead later in the inning as Yorlis Rodriguez then walked to load the bases, however, Rayner Santana struck out and Alexander Suarez grounded out.
The game then remained deadlocked all the way until the 10th inning. JJ Santa Cruz faced the minimum number of hitters over two scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth for San Jose. Spencer Bivens then kept Visalia off the scoreboard over the seventh and eighth stranding a runner in scoring position in both innings. Tyler Myrick followed with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth.
The Giants threatened in the eighth and ninth innings, but came away empty-handed. In the bottom of the eighth, Santana walked with one out before a two-out walk to Aeverson Arteaga. McCray though struck out to end the inning. Then in the ninth, needing one run for a walk-off win, Bericoto produced a one-out single before Mahan walked to put runners on first and second. Cantrelle and Rodriguez, however, both struck out swinging to send the game into extras.
Myrick returned to the mound in the top of the 10th with the free runner, Lawlar, at second. A sacrifice bunt from Wilferd Patino started the inning to move the runner to third before Franco grounded a sharp single up the middle to plate Lawlar for a 5-4 Rawhide lead.
In the bottom of the 10th with Rodriguez at second base as the automatic runner, Visalia reliever Junior Mieses notched three consecutive swinging strikeouts of Santana, pinch-hitter Garrett Frechette and Arteaga to finish the game.
