San Jose Giants News Release
Ehire Adrianza hit a grand slam in the top of the second while Wendell Fairley added a three-run double the next inning as the San Jose Giants cruised to a 10-3 victory over the High Desert Mavericks in the opener of a three-game series on Monday evening at Stater Bros. Stadium. San Jose's magic number to clinch the first half North Division title has been reduced to two. The Giants (41-24) have now won four straight and maintain a five-game lead over the Modesto Nuts (35-28) in the standings. San Jose has five games remaining in the first half.
Adrianza (2-for-4, HR, 4 RBI) smacked his first home run of the season to lead a 12-hit Giants offensive attack. It was also San Jose's first grand slam this year. Fairley (2-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI), Charlie Culberson (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI, SB), Brandon Belt (2-for-4, 2B) and Drew Biery (2-for-3, RBI) also finished with multiple hits.
Oliver Odle (7-2) earned his team-leading seventh victory of the season after tossing 5 1/3 innings with three runs (all earned) and seven hits allowed. Odle walked two and struck out four.
The Giants scored all 10 of their runs over the second, third and fourth innings and enjoyed a 10-1 lead after only 3 1/2 frames. In the top of the second, Biery and Fairley each singled with one out before Juan Perez drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Adrianza was up next and he crushed the first pitch of his at-bat over the fence in right center field for a grand slam and a 4-0 San Jose lead.
The Giants kept the pressure on in the top of the third as Culberson singled with one out before Johnny Monell drew a 10-pitch walk. After Culberson stole third, Biery was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Fairley then lined a double to the fence in left center field scoring all three runners to make it 7-0.
High Desert scored their first run of the contest in the bottom of the third on Rich Poythress' two-out, RBI single before San Jose answered with three more tallies in the top of the fourth. Adrianza started the inning with a leadoff walk before advancing to third on Francisco Peguero's single into right. After Belt struck out and Peguero stole second, Culberson ripped a double into the right center field gap to score two more runs. Then with two outs, Biery blooped a single into left center plating Culberson for a 10-1 advantage.
Odle limited the Mavericks to just one run over the first five innings stranding seven baserunners during that span. In the bottom of the sixth, Johermyn Chavez drew a leadoff walk before Denny Almonte homered down the right field line to bring High Desert to within 10-3. Odle recovered to set down the next hitter, Trevor Coleman, on a groundout before he was removed from the game in favor of Ben Wilshire.
Wilshire (2 1/3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) and Scott Nestor (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) combined to hold the Mavericks scoreless for the remainder of the contest. In the bottom of the eighth against Wilshire, consecutive singles and a hit by a pitch loaded the bases with two outs, however Nestor entered the contest and promptly retired Dennis Raben on a groundout back to the mound. Nestor then worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to seal the Giants victory.
High Desert starter Jake Wild (5-3) suffered the loss after surrendering seven runs (all earned) on six hits over three innings. Wild walked three, hit two batters and struck out three.
