Rochester RazorSharks News Release
They're getting the band back together.
Sammy Monroe has returned. He practiced the last two days with the RazorSharks and could be back playing for them as soon as Saturday.
"It's pretty easy," said Monroe. "I already know the system and plays, so it won't take too long for me to jump in."
Monroe was a star on Rochester's two Premier Basketball League championship teams in 2008 and 2009. He averaged 16.6 points per game over those seasons. That's third best in RazorShark history. Monroe is second in career blocked shots. He also played a part in breaking two backboards at the Blue Cross Arena, one each season.
Since hoisting the PBL championship trophy, Monroe has played in the Philippines, South America and Mexico.
"I learned Spanish," said Monroe. "I've been traveling so much I kind of wanted to stay in the US for a little while. So this is a good idea."
Monroe accepted an invitation from Coach Rod Baker to attend practice on Tuesday. He has worked out the last two days and fit into practice seamlessly, although Coach says he picked up some bad habits on the court he'll need to fix.
Monroe's return comes at a good time. The team is 2-4 and in danger of losing a franchise record fourth straight game. Three nagging injuries this week will force lineup changes in Lawton. Sharp shooting guard Keith Friel won't make the trip with an aggravated hamstring injury. He hasn't practiced all week. Newcomer Mike Williams and Steffon Farley are also questionable for Saturday's game.
When Monroe's return becomes official, he'll be the fifth member of that last championship on the roster joining Friel, Jerice Crouch, Fred Durr and Melvin Council.
After the trip to Oklahoma, things figure to improve. Rochester plays its next seven games at home, starting Saturday afternoon February 12th against Kentucky.
