Springfield Sliders News Release
The Springfield Sliders began post All-Star Game play tonight with a 10-7 win over the Quincy Gems at Robin Roberts Stadium, after a pinch hit walk off grand slam from Sean Gerber in the bottom of the ninth. The game did not start well for the Sliders as Quincy's David Kuhne led off the very first inning with a solo home run. The Gems would get a lead-off home run in the second inning as well, as Aaron Priestes took the first pitch he saw in a Quincy uniform out of the ballpark to make it 2-0. The Gems would add two more runs in the inning to increase their lead to 4-0 before the Sliders would get on the board. The first Slider runs of the night came in the bottom of the third when All-Star Game MVP 1B Matt Tellor hit a three run home run, his tenth of the year to cut the Gems' lead down to one. After a scoreless fourth inning on both sides, Priestes came through with two outs for the Gems, driving in two runs with a single to increase the Quincy lead to 6-3. The Sliders cut the lead to two in the fifth inning, when Tellor hit a single for his fourth RBI of the night, making it 6-4 Gems after five. The Gems would add a run in the sixth inning to increase their lead back to three, and also chase Sliders' starting pitcher Cody Repenning in the process. The Sliders made it interesting in the eighth inning when SS Matt Highland hit a two out RBI single and another run scored on a throwing error on the play. After TR Dunne struck out the side in the top of the ninth, the stage was set for the Sliders to complete the comeback. The rally started with one out as Tellor singled for his fourth hit of the game. LF Mike Fitzgerald followed that up with his second double, and third hit, of the night. C Matt Stevens was then intentionally walked to the loaded bases which the stage for Sean Gerber, who pinch hit for DH Reagan Fowler. Gerber hammered the first pitch off one of the light towers in right field, and the ball actually bounced back into play. There was no doubt that it was gone though, and Gerber was mobbed at home plate by his teammates. With the win, the Sliders are now 4-4 in the second half, and are just 1.5 games behind Terre Haute for first place in the second half. The Sliders and Gems will be back at it tomorrow night at 6:35. As always, the game will be broadcast on the Springfield Sliders' Ustream channel.
