Flint Generals News Release

Week eleven of the 2009-10 season is underway for the Flint Generals, who played their last game before they break for Christmas last night (Tuesday, Dec. 22nd) against Port Huron. The season series has been heavily tilted in Port Huron's favor, but in last Friday night's victory the Generals showed what they are capable of, posting 6 goals (scored by six different players). Flint expected the 'Hawks to hit the ice with a bitter taste in their mouths and that is exactly what happened. For the second time in as many games Rob Nolan, the Gens starting goaltender who usually looks more like a brick wall in net than human, was pulled out of the game after letting in three first period goals. The Gens fought back, making it 4-3 IceHawks and came close to tying the game but Larry Sterling kept the game from going to overtime. The loss halted Flint's home game winning streak at 4 games. Tuesday's game kicked off the food drive with Carriage Town Ministries which will run through January 3rd.

With games both Saturday and Sunday, the holiday break is a short one for the Generals. Saturday, Dec. 26th the team heads right back to work at Perani as they entertain the Dayton Gems. Sunday, Fort Wayne returns for what is sure to be another close game. As the Generals and the Komets battle at Perani, Dayton will be in Port Huron.

Currently, the Gens are nine points behind the fifth ranked Gems and only ten points behind Ft. Wayne in the standings. If the Generals can win their next two games, and both the Komets and the Gems come up short against their Sunday opponents, the Generals can pull themselves within 5 points of the Gems and within 6 of the third ranked Komets, as well as regain home ice advantage.

Flint split their four games in week ten of IHL hockey. Winning both of their home games, the Gens racked up a total of 12 goals, six in each victory. After dropping a 6-1 loss in Port Huron on Tuesday, the Gens were determined not to repeat that effort at home and handed the IceHawks a 6-3 loss on Friday. The offense that came so easily Friday disappeared Saturday in Dayton, handing the Gems a 5-1 victory. For the fourth time in five games the Generals found the back of the net once, and three of those four goals were scored by defensemen. Sunday began with a 5-1 shelling by the Mallards, chasing Rob Nolan from the net before the end of the first. Quad City was met by a very different team in the second, goals by Ben Boudreau and John Ronan kicked off Flint's come back. Two late third period goals by Jake Pence and Jamie Schaafsma completed the turnaround forcing the game into an extra session. Ronan capped off the comeback with the OT winner.
