Oshawa Generals News Release

Tonight, the Oshawa Generals hosted the Mississauga Steelheads at the Ajax Community Centre in their third game of the preseason. Heading into the game, the Generals had one win and one shootout loss in their first two preseason games. The team looked to grab a win before their final game of the preseason on Sunday against the Peterborough Petes.

1st Period:

The Gens came out of the gate strong, generating a powerplay just over two minutes into the game. Oshawa was able to capitalize on their powerplay opportunity with an early goal from Nick Wong on a scramble in front of the net, with assists by Domenico Commisso and Mitchell Brewer. After sustaining pressure throughout the opening half of the first, a rocket shot by Ian Blacker beat Steelhead's goaltender Matthew Dunsmoor, giving the Gens a 2-0 lead. The assists on the goal went to Danil Antropov and Sean Allen. After being down by two early, the Steelheads were able to answer right back with a goal of their own from Keean Washkurak, putting Mississauga within one of the Gens. With a powerplay right afterwards, the Steelheads looked to tie up the game, but Oshawa goaltender Mario Peccia was able to shut the door. The game remained 2-1 for the Generals heading into the second period.

2nd Period:

In the opening minutes of the second period, the Steelheads managed to put one passed the Gens to tie the game up at two. Shortly afterward, Oshawa received a penalty for holding, giving Mississauga the man advantage. With a huge save from Peccia on the PK, Oshawa held off the pressure to keep the game tied 2-2. The Steelheads then went on to take two penalties, giving the Gens a chance to take the lead with a two-man advantage. After sustaining pressure and ringing a shot off the post, the Gens came close but weren't able to put one in the net. As one Steelhead penalty still remained, Keean Washkurak scored a shorthanded goal at the other end for his second goal of the night, giving Mississauga a 3-2 lead. Oshawa was able to regain momentum with five minutes remaining in the period, after a deflection in front of the net by Cole Resnick snuck passed Dunsmoor to tie the game back up at three goals apiece. The Steelheads saw a late surge, but the Generals were able to hold off the pressure and keep the game tied at 3-3 heading into the third period.

3rd Period:

The Gens wasted no time at the start of the third, getting a quick goal from Eric Henderson to take the lead at 4-3. Sean Allen and Ty Tullio got the assists on the play. Things only got better from there for Oshawa, who added to their lead with William Ennis' first goal of the preseason on assists from Allan McShane and Domenico Commisso, putting the Gens up 5-3. Continuing their pressure, Oshawa spent a good chunk of time in the middle of period on the attack. After both receiving penalties just passed the halfway point of the period, the two teams spent two minutes playing 4-on-4. Scoring chances were exchanged at both ends of the ice, but the score remained 5-3 in the Generals' favour. With the Steelheads pushing to tie the game late in the period, the Gens were able to hold onto their lead and win the game with a score of 5-3.

The Gens look to build off their win in their final preseason game of the season against the Peterborough Petes on Sunday. The game will be hosted in the Scugog Arena in Port Perry.
