Flint Generals News Release
FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals and the Dayton Gems met for a second time in as many games Friday night at Perani and once again the Generals came out on top, this time in a much closer 2-1 decision. The win was the Generals fourth straight victory, giving them their longest winning streak of the season.
Dayton struck first with a Pierce Norton goal .42 seconds into the game; the Gems first shot took a lucky bounce up and over Generals netminder Sergei Zvyagin giving the visitors the early 1-0 lead. The score remained the same until Rick Smith beat Derek MacIntyre high glove side with .46 seconds left on the clock to tie the game after Pascal Rheaume managed to keep the puck in the offensive zone.
The Generals carried the momentum into the second period from their last goal in the first. Shots were more even but the Gens had the 9-5 advantage. The home team came close to taking a 2-1 lead on a few occasions but their best chance was short handed, Ben Boudreau came flying down the right side and hand MacIntyre out of the net but Boudreau's shot narrowly missed on the short side. The score was halted at 1-1 for much of the period but John Mori gave the Gens the lead on a scramble play in front of the net. The puck started to trickle over the goal line and it appeared as though MacIntyre had somehow kept it out and had it under him but the puck squeezed through into the back of the net.
Play was back and forth in the final frame but the Gens outscored Dayton for the second straight period 9-4. Flint was less than one minute away from the final buzzer when Steve Silver was called for interference, putting the Gens and their fans back on their heels but with one final save Zvyagin sealed the victory for the home crowd.
With the frustrations of the Gems from their Wednesday night slaying, Friday was not without its extracurricular activity. In the first period it was Chris Kovalcik and Russ Smith who entertained the crowd with a one-on-one battle. Mike Olynyk and Craig Cescon dropped the gloves in the second following a hard hit into the boards.
The Generals take the ice again this Sunday, March 14th at 4PM when they host the Bloomington PrairieThunder for the makeup game from February 16th.
Tickets for Sunday's game are available at the Perani Arena Ticket Office, by phone at 810-744-0580, or through Ticketmaster. For group ticket information, call the Generals Office at 810-744-0222.
