Jackson Generals News Release
Jackson, Tenn. - A pair of Pensacola pitching prospects combined to shut down Jackson's offense in a 1-0 loss for the Generals Monday night. The defeat sets up a rubber match between the Generals and Blue Wahoos in Tuesday's home finale at The Ballpark at Jackson.
Cody Reed (5-2, 2.47) stole the show in front of friends and family Monday night. The Memphis native, who was acquired by Cincinnati as part of the Johnny Cueto trade last month, tossed eight shutout innings to earn his fifth win in the Southern League. The southpaw struck out eight without walking a batter while allowing only four hits.
Jackson (20-43, 49-82) was held without a baserunner until the fourth inning. After Reed set down the first 11 men he saw, Tyler Smith smacked a two-out single in the fourth to extend his on-base streak to 25 games. Smith tied Dario Pizzano, who hit in 25-straight games earlier this year, for the longest stretch of any Jackson player this season.
Smith wasn't the only Tyler that extended a streak on Monday. Tyler Bortnick, who was named Southern League Player of the Week earlier in the day, pushed his hitting streak to six with a two-out double in the sixth inning. The infielder has 12 his in his last 23 at-bats for the Generals.
The Generals added two more hits in the seventh inning on consecutive singles by Tyler Marlette and Marcus Littlewood, but Reed struck out Aderlin Rodriguez to put an end to Jackson's best scoring chance of the night. All four of the team's hits came with two outs on Monday.
Pensacola (36-28, 61-71) only scored one run, but it was enough to earn the victory. After stranding two men in each of the first three innings, the Blue Wahoos pushed one across in the top of the sixth. Juan Duran crushed a triple off of the centerfield fence with one out, and he came home two batters later on an RBI single by Seth Mejias-Brean to make it 1-0.
James Gillheeney (4-6, 3.05) suffered the defeat despite giving up just one run in 5.2 innings of work. He allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out six. The lefty was taken out of the contest after the two-out RBI single in the sixth.
Jackson's bullpen was strong again in defeat, with Brian Moran and Trey Cochran-Gill combining to throw 3.1 innings of shutout relief. Cochran-Gill struck out four batters in 2.1 innings while allowing only one Pensacola batter to reach.
The Generals finally got to face Pensacola's bullpen in the ninth, but failed to do anything against Zack Weiss (S, 25). The tall righty struck out the side on 14 pitches to pick up his league-leading 25th save of the season and seal the victory.
The loss was Jackson's 21st in shutout fashion, which is more than any other team in the circuit. The Generals need a victory in their home finale Tuesday to avoid having the worst home record in the modern era of the Southern League.
Jackson and Pensacola square off in a rubber match for Jackson's home finale on Tuesday night. Edwin Diaz (4-10, 4.30) is slated to make his final start of the season in Jackson against Pensacola righty Barrett Astin (4-4, 5.08). First pitch from The Ballpark at Jackson is slated for 7:05 pm CT and you can listen to all the action on the TJ Network (AM 1390, FM 94.1 and 94.3) in Jackson and online via the TuneIn Radio App starting with the Tennessee Army National Guard Pregame Show at 6:50 pm CT!
