August 31, 2015 - Southern League (SL1) News Release

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for August 24 through 30. Righthander Adrian Houser of the Biloxi Shuckers was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Jackson Generals second baseman Tyler Bortnick earned Player of the Week honors.

In 13.0 total innings over a pair of scoreless starts, Adrian Houser of Biloxi went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and seven strikeouts against five hits and three walks. With a 0.62 WHIP, lowest among pitchers with 10 innings or more, Houser helped keep alive the Shuckers second-half title chances. In his first start, a 9-0 win over Mobile, Houser gave up just two hits and two walks, while striking out three in seven scoreless frames. Five days later, at Mississippi, the Locust Grove, Oklahoma native fired six more shutout innings, while striking out four Braves batters to run his Southern League record to a perfect 4-0. This is the first career weekly award for Houser.

Jackson Generals second baseman Tyler Bortnick had an incredible week at the plate, either leading or tied for the league lead with a .520 batting average, 10 runs scored, 13 hits, five extra-base hits, 22 total bases, three doubles, two homeruns, nine RBI, a .586 on-base percentage, .880 slugging percentage and OPS of 1.466. Bortnick hit safely in six of his seven games played and had more than one hit in four of those contests. His biggest performance of the week came in the Generals 11-3 victory over the North Division second-half leader Montgomery Biscuits. The Mentor, Ohio native collected five base hits in six at-bats with three runs scored, two doubles, and two RBI. Three nights later, the former East Carolina Pirate poked a pair of homeruns in addition to five RBI, a walk and three runs scored in an 8-2 win over the South Division second-half leading Pensacola Blue Wahoos. This is the third career weekly award for Bortnick after he was chosen by the Midwest League in June of 2010 and the Florida State League in June of 2011.
