Generals Organization & Players Rewarded for 12-2 Season

EL PASO, TX. : The El Paso Generals are enjoying a much needed bye week during the first round of the 2009 IFL playoffs and on Wednesday, July 15 the team held a news conference from Hiney's Restaurant in El Paso to recognize Head Coach Brian Brents as being named IFL Coach of the Year and the El Paso Generals being named Best New Franchise of the Year in the IFL.

Additionally, further announcements were made in regards to the four Generals players selected to the All-IFL First and Second Teams this season. Wide out DeAngelo Woodie was named All-IFL First Team Offense after compiling 64 receptions for 1,030 yards and 21 touchdowns for the Generals this season. Woodie additionally registered 890 kick return yards giving him 2,063 all-purpose yards this season. Woodie was also named IFL Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 18 of the regular season after returning a kickoff back for a touchdown against San Angelo.

Jermaine Pruitt was named First Team Offense for his excellent performance this season on the offensive line. Pruitt supplied protection all year long for QB Tommy Jones who was named Second Team Offense. Jones threw for 3,158 yards and 66 touchdown passes this season for the Generals. Jones led the IFL in passing yards averaged a game, total offense, and he finished second in touchdown passes behind Chris Dixon (Billings) who had 69.

Ron Ellington was named First Team Defense after a great year on the defensive line. Ellington was the only Generals defensive player selected after finishing second on the team with 50.5 total tackles. Ellington led the Generals defense with 17.5 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, three blocked kicks and two recorded safeties.

"I'm proud of each of our players that were selected and all of them played a key role in helping us have a successful season. They are also going to play important parts in helping our team during the playoffs." stated Generals Head Coach Brian Brents.

El Paso will await the winner of the first round playoff game between the Abilene Ruff Riders and San Angelo Stampede Express on Saturday, July 18. El Paso's playoff game is scheduled for Sunday, July 26 from the El Paso County Coliseum and kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The first 1,000 fans will receive Generals trading card sets and the Generals will unveil their Lone Star Division Championship banner during the pre-game festivities.
