Generals Look To Hold Off Raiders On Fourth Of July
July 3, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
El Paso Generals News Release
EL PASO, TX. : The El Paso Generals will host the Rochester Raiders on Military Appreciation Night for the Fourth of July from the El Paso County Coliseum. El Paso has already sealed the Lone Star Division Championship but now the Generals are looking to capture home field advantage in the playoffs after a dominating 51-18 win over the Colorado Ice last weekend. El Paso scored 28 unanswered points following the first quarter and they would never trail in the ball game. Now El Paso turns their attention to a team that has already clinched a playoff spot in the Rochester Raiders.
Like the Generals, the Raiders have won five consecutive ball games with the most recent being a 64-39 victory over the Maryland Maniacs last Saturday. The obvious key match-up will be the Generals high-powered offense against the Raiders top-rated defense in the IFL. El Paso has averaged close to 57 points a game this season and they are led by one of the top quarterbacks in the league in IFL MVP-candidate Tommy Jones. Jones and the Generals will most likely attack the Raiders secondary with DeAngelo Woodie and Lemans Casimier, but look for Cedrick Johnson to be another key factor in the passing department as well. Ulysses Odom has turned into a great all-purpose running back who has been very consistent in the red-zone.
However, the Generals offensive line will have their work cut for them as they face one of the toughest defensive lines in the league. Raiders DL Eddie Bynes leads the IFL with 17 sacks this season and he had two against Maryland last weekend. Look for Bynes, Dale Buck and Steve Fleming to apply tremendous pressure on Jones in this ball game. The Raiders secondary will feature Chris Johnson and Makis Witaker, two very good prospects that will have to create turnovers in this game if Rochester is going to keep things close.
The Raiders offense is led by former Abilene backup QB Perry Patterson who has thrown for 31 touchdown passes this season. Rob Mager will be his go-to guy in the passing department. Mager leads the Raiders with 798 yards receiving and 22 touchdowns this season. But the real secret behind the Raiders offense is Jamil Porter who is the amongst the top in the IFL with 512 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.
The end result of this ball game could come down to whoever will make the game-changing turnover. Both teams can light up the scoreboard but one team will have the edge based on the turnover battle and better productivity inside the red-zone.
