Generals Earn Point In Largest Crowd Of The Season
FLINT, MI - The gloves came off early in the 5- 4 OT Bloomington rematch victory between the Flint Generals and the Bloomington PrairieThunder Friday night at a comfortably warm Perani Arena in front of an audience of 3,189.
The opening period saw no scoring but of 50 minutes worth of penalties. New comer Mason Cossette mixed it up early with big bodied Justin Sawyer. Just a few minutes later Jan Prusa and Mike Liambas battled, leading to a bench brawl and the ejection of Luke Phillips and Robin Gomez.
Scoring began in the middle stanza, the Gens striking first with a power play goal from Matt Moffat, beating Sebastian Dahm far-side from the left circle. John Mori made it 2-0 at 15:45, getting assists from Jamie Schaafsma and Jason Hill. Bloomington pulled within one with four minutes to play in the period. With the officials keeping a watchful eye, the second period failed to see the same parade to the penalty box that fans witnessed in the first.
The PrairieThunder tied it up early in the third with a Jamie Carroll goal from the right circle. The Gens took back the lead when Pascal Rheaume's fourth goal of the season. They took their second two goal lead of the night on an Alec Kirschner breakaway shorthanded beauty.
Bloomington refused to back down as Jason Lepine beat Rob Nolan with a deke right in front of the net, cutting Flint's lead to one goal. Lepine scored his second of the night with .21 seconds remaining in regulation, forcing an extra session.
Play was back and forth for much of the overtime but Carroll would be the hero for the PT giving them the win.
The Generals went 1 of 6 with the man advantage while Bloomington went 1 of 8. Nolan stopped 38 of 43 shots faced but it was Bloomington's Dahm who got the win, stopping 28 of 32.
Action resumes at Perani Monday night for the rescheduled game against Muskegon. The original game was back in November but was cancelled due to poor ice conditions.
