MOBILE, ALA. - The Jackson Generals dropped the first game in their scheduled double-header against the Mobile BayBears on Tuesday, and it ended up being their only result of the afternoon. The Generals (35-29) and BayBears (35-28) cancelled the second game of their double-header because of inclement weather, meaning Jackson enters their final series of the First Half with just a half-game lead over second-place Montgomery (35-30) in the Southern League's North Division standings. Two other teams, Chattanooga (34-31) and Tennessee (33-31) are also within two games of the Generals with five games remaining. The division winner in the season's First Half will be awarded an automatic postseason bid.
Right-hander Ryan Atkinson (2-6, 4.14 ERA) went pitch-for-pitch with Mobile's Griffin Canning through the first five innings of the contest, with neither pitcher allowing more than one hit. The scoreless tie held through the first two outs in the bottom of the sixth, when Mobile's Luis Rengifo delivered a two-run homer that put Mobile on top. Atkinson finished the inning with a flyout from the next hitter, throwing Jackson's first complete game of the season with two hits, two runs, and three walks allowed, striking out seven men on 90 pitches.
In the top of the 7th, Galli Cribbs cranked a two-out double to get the tying run to the plate, but Mobile's Matt Custred (2-3, 2.57 ERA) retired Jason Morozowski on a flyout to to end the contest. The Generals went 0-for-6 with men in scoring position, getting three of their four total bases from Cribbs. The second game of the scheduled double-header was halted in the top of the second inning due to rain, eventually being cancelled (rather than suspended) because the two teams do not meet again in the season's First Half.
