Generals Continue To Battle For Playoff Berth
FLINT, MI - Week 23 saw the Flint Generals play 3 games, all on the road, and when the dust settled they found themselves in fifth place in the IHL standings five points behind fourth place Bloomington. The Generals started the week by making a trade with the Dayton Gems to receive veteran forward Mike Olynyk. The Generals parted with Mike Smyth who they obtained from the Bloomington Prairie Thunder as 'future considerations' from a deal earlier in the season.
On Wednesday Flint travelled to the i-Wireless Center to play the Quad City Mallards. Goaltender Sergei Zvyagin made a triumphant return to the arena where he enjoyed so much success earlier in his career and his 29 saves lead the Generals to a 2-1 victory over the Mallards. Tyler Howells and Dan Lapointe provided all the goals the Generals would need on this night, which was punctuated with Zvyagin being named 1st Star. Two nights later the Generals travelled down to Bloomington, Illinois where they took on the PrairieThunder and played arguably their best two way game of the season winning 6-1. John Ronan scored three times for the Generals and Bryan Smolinski had four assists. Sergei Zvyagin got the victory between the pipes when he stopped 19 out of 20 shots, and with the victory, the Generals pulled within five points of the Prairie Thunder. After a long trip back to Flint, getting home when the sun was coming up, the Generals again boarded the bus later that afternoon and travelled to Port Huron to take on the IceHawks. Despite scoring 4 goals in less than six minutes late in the third period, they Generals couldn't get the equalizer with the goalie pulled and fell to the IceHawks 6-5. John Mori, and IHL Player of the Week, Jamie Schaafsma lead the way with three points each for the Generals who despite the loss, didn't lose any ground to the 'Thunder as they lost in Quad City.
The Generals are back on the ice this Sunday, March 28th for their only game of week 24 when the Fort Wayne Komets invade Perani Arena for a 4pm start. A refreshed Generals squad will be looking to continue their quest for the playoffs as they play their final 12 games of the regular season. The Generals wrap up their schedule with eight games at home and four on the road. They play Fort Wayne, Port Huron, Muskegon and the Bloomington PrairieThunder three times each down the stretch, hosting those opponents twice each at the Perani Arena & Event Center.
