El Paso Generals News Release

EL PASO, TX. : Following a first-round bye week in the ‘09 IFL post-season, the El Paso Generals began their playoff run with a second round match-up with the San Angelo Stampede Express on Sunday, July 26. El Paso did not miss a beat after finishing out the regular season on a seven game winning streak. The Generals ended San Angelo's storybook season with a 75-37 win clinching a spot in the Intense Conference Championship Game.

The Generals got on the right track early after a big return on the opening kickoff setting up a seven yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tommy Jones to Josh Smith to make it 7-0. San Angelo got on the scoreboard with a Tommy Staples 20-yard field goal to make it 7-3, but El Paso extended their lead to 14-3 when Jones found Smith again for a 24-yard touchdown pass to finish out the first quarter.

The Generals defense stepped up in the second quarter by stopping the Stampede Express on fourth down inside the five yard line. El Paso's offense responded with a three play drive that went 48 yards and it was capped off with a three yard touchdown pass from Jones to DeAngelo Woodie to make it 20-3. San Angelo responded on their ensuing drive when Sonny Cumbie found LaMarcus Preston for a 32-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 20-10. However, El Paso regained momentum to finish out the first half when Jones hooked up with Lemans Casimier for a 20-yard touchdown pass and Jermaine Blakely added an incredible 13-yard touchdown run to give the Generals a 34-17 halftime advantage.

El Paso owned the second half of the ball game by outscoring San Angelo 41-20 and it all began when Tommy Jones found DeAngelo Woodie once again for a 11-yard touchdown pass to make it 41-17. Things for San Angelo certainly took a turn for the worse when Bobby Chase fumbled the football following a reception and Generals DB Melvin Screen returned the loose ball back 30 yards for a Generals score. El Paso went into the fourth quarter with a commanding 55-23 lead.

Josh Smith got back into the action in the fourth quarter when Tommy Jones found him for a 38-yard touchdown pass as RB Ulysses Odoms ran in two scores from 12 and 14 yards out. San Angelo's offense collected two more touchdowns in the quarter with a two yard run from Brannon Hatley and a four yard touchdown pass from Cumbie to Preston. However, it was too little too late for the Stampede Express as their Cinderella story came to a close with a 75-37 loss to the Generals.

Tommy Jones finished the game going 15 of 21 for 236 yards and six touchdowns as Lemans Casimier led the Generals receiving core with six catches for 109 yards and one score. San Angelo QB Sonny Cumbie finished going 17 of 36 for 258 yards and four touchdowns as LaMarcus Preston registered seven catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. The real X-factor for El Paso was Jermaine Blakely who added two rushing touchdowns on offense and defensively had a few key tackles with a pass break-up.

El Paso has clinched a spot in the Intense Conference Championship Game where they will travel to Billings, Montana to face the Billings Outlaws (13-2) in arguably the most anticipated match-up of the 2009 season. The winner will be named the Intense Conference Champions and will clinch a berth to The United Bowl. The Conference Championship Game is set for Saturday, August 1, 2009 from Billings and kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
