
Generals Clinch First Round Bye in Playoffs

EL PASO, TX. : The El Paso Generals had already clinched a playoff spot entering their June 20 match-up with the River City Rage. However, the Generals looked to seal the Lone Star Division Title by defeating the Rage and having Corpus Christi defeat the Abilene Ruff Riders. River City took an early lead on the first play from scrimmage as QB Maurice Avery found WR Shaun Piper for a 26-yard touchdown pass to give the Rage a 6-0 lead. But following a good kickoff return, the Generals retook the lead after Tommy Jones found IFL MVP candidate DeAngelo Woodie for a four yard touchdown pass to make it 7-6. River City would counter with nine unanswered points as Jason Bondizo added a 15-yard field goal and Luke McCardle collected a 12-yard touchdown pass to make it 15-7, River City. El Paso would finish off the first quarter on a good note as Ulysses Odom found the end-zone from six yards out to cut the lead to 15-14.
The Generals would get the ball back to begin the second quarter and the offense capitalized as Jones once again found DeAngelo Woodie for a three yard touchdown pass retaking the lead 21-15. River City was able to answer as Avery hooked up with Hurtis Chinn for a 16-yard touchdown pass to make it 22-21, River City. The Generals would explode for 13 unanswered points with touchdown passes from Tommy Jones to Marquiz Price and DeAngelo Woodie. Rage QB Maurice Avery would tack on an 11-yard touchdown run but El Paso led at halftime, 41-29.
Things were very much back and forth in the third quarter as Ulysses Odom began the second half by finding the end-zone for the second time to make it 48-29. Luke McCardle registered a 20-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 48-35, and the Rage picked up a 55-yard touchdown return off a kickoff however El Paso remained ahead at the end of the quarter, 55-42.
River City close the gap to 55-49 to start the fourth quarter after Hurtis Chinn caught at 17-yard touchdown pass. However, El Paso expanded their lead to 58-49 following a Trey Crum 40-yard field goal. El Paso was able to seal the win after Ulysses Odom scored two touchdowns late in the fourth from 15 and two yards out. El Paso improved to 9-2 overall with the 70-56 win and with the Corpus Christi Hammerheads defeating the Abilene Ruff Riders, 44-35, the Generals clinched the Lone Star Division Championship.
QB Tommy Jones finished with 260 yards passing and five touchdowns as Ulysses Odom rushed for 55 yards and four scores. DeAngelo Woodie caught eight passes for 114 yards and three touchdowns and added 36 yards on kick returns. Rage QB Maurice Avery threw for 212 yards and five touchdowns as Luke McCardle caught nine passes for 137 yards and two scores. The big factor was the Generals ability to go 7-for-7 in red-zone scoring chances.
El Paso returns home for the next two weeks with the first meeting against the Colorado Ice on Saturday, June 27.
