KLAMATH FALLS, OR - Battling for the win on home turf, The Klamath Falls Gems and the American Legion Klamath Falls Falcons faced off at Kiger Stadium, with the Gems winning, 7-0.
The Gems, with two outs in the first inning, scored first off four consecutive walks. Turner Gill started the walks, followed by Kainoa Crowell, Nick Miller, and ending with Dan Pardini getting an RBI walk for the first run of the game. Falcons starting pitcher Justin Chavarria went three innings giving up six walks and striking out three.
Starting pitcher Zach Earle went one inning striking out two of three. Later Earle stole second base after pinch running for catcher Bo Cornish. Gems pitcher Steven Schoonover came in to start the second inning, and after two errors, Falcons infielder Dillon Smith hit a single to load the bases. Schoonover struck out the next two to get out of the jam.
Bo Cornish led the Gems at the plate, going three-for-three with two singles, a triple, and had two RBIs. Joel Atkinson, the leadoff batter for the Gems, hit his first homerun of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Gems come back to Kiger Stadium to play the Marysville Gold Sox in the third of three non-league games on Monday at 7:05 p.m.
The Gems are members of the West Coast League, a nine-team professional style wood-bat summer college league. The WCL features pro prospects from major conferences across the country. More than 100 WCL alums are playing affiliated professional baseball this season, and 11 ex-WCL stars have played in the Major Leagues this season.
