Klamath Falls Gems News Release
Klamath Falls, Oregon: Tuesday, April 30, 2013: The Klamath Falls Gems are excited to announce the signing of two players from the University of Portland for the upcoming 2013 season. The Gems have signed infielder Zack McCoy and outfielder Chet Thompson.
McCoy is a 6'0" 170 lb. switch-hitting junior, who prepped at Westview High School in San Diego, CA. As a freshman with the Pilots he appeared in 13 games, starting five games, with four doubles. As a sophomore McCoy started 26 games with eight doubles and four RBIs. "Zack has three years of experience at the division one level and will give us great balance in the infield, and I like the fact he is a switch hitter," said Gems head coach Mitch Karraker.
Thompson is a 6'3" 175 lb. redshirt junior left-handed hitter, who attended Gig Harbor High school in Washington. Last season, Thompson started 24 games and had six extra base hits including three triples and stole two of three bases on the year. "Chet will play all three outfield positions for us this summer and will be a solid left handed bat in our lineup," said Gems head coach Mitch Karraker.
"I've had a strong relationship with the University of Portland coaching staff, both assistant coach Tucker Brack and head coach Chris Sperry," said Gems General Manager Grant Wilson. "I've had the honor of having University of Portland players in each of the past 3 year when I was GM for the Cowlitz Black Bears and they are always good hardnosed players" added Wilson.
2013 Klamath Falls Gems Ticket Packages are available by calling 541-883-4367. The first 2013 home game will be against the Medford Rogues on Saturday, June 1.
