Dayton Gems News Release

Dayton, OH- The Dayton Gems Ownership Group, proud member of the Central Hockey League, announced today that they have signed defenseman Nick Klaren and re-signed right winger Jonathan Ornelas. Terms of the deals were not disclosed due to league and team mandates.

Klaren enters his second professional season of hockey after spending the 2009-10 season with the Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League (CHL), Mississippi Surge of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) and South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL.

Prior to his rookie season last year, Klaren spent four seasons at the University of Wisconsin Stout, there he appeared in 108 games and recorded 64 points on 23 goals and 41 assists. Klaren scored 10 of his 23 career goals on the power play and increased his point totals each of the four seasons at Wisconsin Stout. In addition to all of his offensive numbers Klaren, 6'1, 200 pounds, led the Blue Devils to the Division III Frozen Four in his senior season.

"Nick Klaren is going to be a good asset for us on defense and his natural offensive ability will complement our blue line quite nicely," said Head Coach and General Manager Brian Gratz. "He has a great combination of size and skill and will fit in very well with the rest of our team."

Ornelas finished the 2009-10 season as the second leading goal-scorer on the Gems with 22 goals and tied for second in points with 43 (Couturier). Prior to coming to Dayton last season, "Johnny O" (as he is known to the fans in Dayton) spent the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons in the Central Hockey League (CHL) with the New Mexico Scorpions and Amarillo Gorillas.

Ornelas attended R.P.I from 2004-2008, there he appeared in 142 games and recorded 64 points on 34 goals and 30 assists. Also while at R.P.I. he finished as a member of the ECAC All-Academic Team three out of four years. Ornelas was the ECAC Player of the Week in November of 2005 and was selected to the Governor's Cup All-Tournament Team in 2007. Prior to his collegiate career, Ornelas was a five-sport athlete in high school playing hockey, volleyball, baseball, soccer and golf.
