Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts got a pair of home runs from Dustin Geiger and Brennen Salgado as they began their exhibition slate on a winning note Wednesday afternoon, beating Friends University 5-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

After Tim Brown kept Friends off the board in the first, the Wingnuts (1-0) offense went to work. With a man on and two outs, Geiger picked up the home team's first hit of the exhibition season, launching a two-run opposite field home run to put Wichita up 2-0 four batters into the contest.

The Wichita staff kept the Falcons bats silent for the majority of the game. Brown got the Wingnuts started, allowing just one hit and two baserunners total over his four innings of work, retiring the final eight he faced.

Following Brown, Alex Boshers came in to toss a pair of scoreless frames, pitching around a one-out triple in the fifth before retiring the final five Falcons he saw on the afternoon.

Wichita added a tally to their cushion in the fourth. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Brent Dean stole second, then came around to score on an RBI single by Brent Clevlen. Wichita then made it 4-0 two innings later, when a pair of errors allowed Leo Vargas to scamper home.

Friends picked up their only runs of the contest in the seventh. Richard Ruff struggled with his control as he issued four walks which led to a pair of runs for the Falcons. Seth Harvey came in with two outs and the bases loaded in the frame and induced an inning-ending pop up to keep Wichita's advantage at two. Harvey followed that up by retiring the side in order in the eighth inning.

Frankie Reed worked a scoreless top of the ninth inning before Salgado launched a solo homer to put the exclamation point on the Wingnuts victory in the bottom of the ninth.

The Wingnuts continue their five-game exhibition slate on Friday as take on the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University in the first of a two-game set. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.

The ninth season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins on Thursday, May 19th at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium against the Lincoln Saltdogs.
