Gehring's Four Goals Leads RiverHawks Past Surge
November 26, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
Augusta RiverHawks Forward Jim Gehring had a solid rookie season during the 2010-11 season, but many observers saw the potential for far more offense in his game. Those observers appear to be right as Gehring continued a magnificent 2011-12 sophomore campaign with a franchise-record four goals Saturday night in Biloxi, MS, leading his team to a 5-2 victory over the defending President's Cup Champion Surge.
The four goals put Gehring into a tie for the Southern Professional Hockey League lead in goals scored with 14. He also sits third in the league in points with 22.
The win makes it a perfect week for the RiverHawks who won all three games they played, two of them coming on the road. The RiverHawks now lead the SPHL by five points, sitting with eleven wins compared with just two losses and one overtime loss.
The offensive star for the RiverHawks last season appears to be getting revved up this season. Captain Matt Auffrey, who struggled to start the season, followed up a three-point game in Friday night's game with two assists Saturday. The week's breakout performance has moved him into the top-15 scorers in the SPHL, but more importantly has provided the RiverHawks with remarkable scoring depth throughout their lineup.
Also encouraging for the RiverHawks is the fact that it does not appear to matter who starts in net for the team. Goaltender Jon Olthuis picked up the first two wins of the week, but Saturday night it was BJ O'Brien who made 26 saves for his second win in a RiverHawks' uniform.
Also scoring for the RiverHawks was Chris Doyle who continued his strong play and moved into the top-10 in league scoring. He helped his cause by adding an assist to his totals for the night.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Thursday, December 1st as they play the rival Knoxville Ice Bears. It is another "Pucks, Bucks, and Brews" night as drafts are just a dollar. The puck drops at 7:35pm. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
