Orlando Rays News Release
ORLANDO -Orlando starting pitcher Chad Gaudin tossed eight strong innings and Juan Salas pounded out four hits to lead the Rays to a 7-1 win over the Tennessee Smokies in front of 1,560 at Cracker Jack Stadium Sunday.
The 20-year-old Gaudin saw his scoreless inning streak end at 13 1/3 innings when Chris Weekly smacked an RBI single with one out in the 3rd. It was the only run he would allow as the New Orleans native went eight innings and allowed one earned run on six hits. He walked one Tennessee batter and struck out 11, most by an Orlando pitcher this season. Gaudin (2-0) entered the game with a 1-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. The one earned run allowed will push his ERA to 0.47 over his three starts (19.0 IP).
The Rays jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second when John-Paul Davis and B.J. Barns laced back-to-back doubles. Barns' double scored Davis, and Barns came around to score on Joey Gathright's RBI single. Orlando would add three more in the third on four hits, highlighted by Davis' two-run single.
The Rays would close out the scoring with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Danny Massiatte hit his first home run of the season in the fifth while Juan Salas' RBI single in the sixth scored Jesus Feliciano in the sixth. Salas would finish with four hits on the night with one run scored and two RBI, while Davis chipped in a 2-5 effort with two RBI and a run scored.
With the win, Orlando improved to 15-20 on the second half and 47-57 overall, while Tennessee slipped to 22-13, 58-47. Orlando has now won seven of their last eight games and has taken four straight home contests.
The Rays and Smokies continue the four-game series tomorrow at 7:05, with Orlando sending RHP Jim Magrane (8-5, 3.66) to the mound against RHP Rhett Parrott (8-9, 3.27).
