Louisiana IceGators News Release

LAFAYETTE, LA - The IceGators (7-11) returned to the ice Thursday night in Biloxi against the Mississippi Surge (11-5). The Surge led the season series entering the night 3-1 and were 6-2 at home during the season. Last time the teams met Mississippi jumped all over the 'Gators and took a 4-0 after the first period but it was a different story tonight but the result was the same. Mississippi defeated the IceGators 2-0.

The opening period was evenly matched. In the first 10 minutes of the game the 'Gators out shot the Surge 5-4, but the following 10 minutes Louisiana out shot the Surge 7-2. However, each goalie, Scott Darling (LOU) and Dan Earles (MIS) were up to the task, neither allowing a goal.

The second period followed the same pattern as the first period did; great goalie play. This time the Surge were able to out shoot the 'Gators 18-9. The only mistake in the entire period was by the IceGators when Beau McLaughlin was called for hooking. This put the Surge on a power play with 15:53 to go in the period. The Surge got four shots off during the power play but the Darling was up to the task and saved each shot. Once again both teams' goalie was able to stop each shot on goal and set up a great third period.

When the third period began the 'Gators knew they would be fighting an up hill battle the whole way. Louisiana is 1-3 on the road and tied after the second period. The Surge opened the period taking 7 of the first 9 shots and spent much of the opening portion of the period on the offensive end of the ice. Matt Zultek (MIS), who scored a hat trick in the last game verse the IceGators, put Mississippi on the board with 7:53 remaining in the game and giving the Surge a 1-0 lead. With 4:05 left in the period, Ryan Fultz (LOU) was called for holding. As the power play was winding down Jason Cassells (MIS) took a shot on goal and then got his own rebound and pushed it past Darling, giving the Surge a 2-0 lead.

"Tonight's lose is a tough one to take," answered IceGator Head Coach Dave MacIsaac after the 2-0 lose to the Surge. "We played hard and Scott [Darling] had an excellent game but unfortunately we came up just short. The guys are going to have to put this game behind us and focus on Fayetteville back at home tomorrow."
