Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (May 3, 2006) - Fort Myers Miracle starting pitcher Matt Garza knows his season is going well when he gives up one run in seven innings on Wednesday night and his ERA goes UP. Garza was his usual dominant self in a 3-1 Miracle victory over the Lakeland Tigers at Hammond Stadium.
Garza used 82 pitches, 57 for strikes in keeping the Tigers at bay. The only inning he ran into trouble was the sixth and it wasn't all his doing. He gave up a double down the right field line to Jim Essian, which glanced off the body of first baseman Brock Peterson. Chris Robinson then laid down a bunt and Kory Feiner decided to try and throw out Essian at third, but was too late. After Gilberto Mejia was hit with a two strike pitch, Garza bared down. He got Clete Thomas on strikes. Jeff Frazier's sacrifice fly scored Essian, but Garza got Jeff Larrish to pop out to end the inning. Garza went 7.0 innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out six and earning his fourth victory of the season.
The Miracle, who improved to 16-10, jumped on the board in the second inning. With two outs Jose Leger was hit by a pitch. Deacon Burns then tripled into the right-center field alley which scored Leger to make it 1-0.
They tacked on two more in the fifth. With one out Kory Feiner had a pitch hit off the nob of his bat. It landed between first and the pitchers mound, but Tigers pitcher Dallas Trahern had trouble picking it up and Feiner wound up with an infield single. The next batter Just Arneson ripped an RBI triple to right and he scored on Alexi Casill'as single to right. Trahern pitched the first complete game in the FSL this season, but got the loss going 8.0 innings allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out three.
The newest Miracle, Danny Powers who was called up from Single-A Beloit Tuesday, earned his first save in a Miracle jersey. He retired the first five batters he faced in the eighth and ninth, then gave up an infield single to Larish and a bloop single to center by Victor Mendez. Powers got Nick McIntyre to fly out to left to end the game.
The same two teams meet Thursday evening at 7:05 p.m. in the second of the three game series. The Miracle send RHP Anthony Swarzak (1-2, 3.52) to the hill against Tigers RHP Andrew Kown (NR). The game can be heard live on Sports Radio 770 ESPN with the pre-game show beginning at 6:45 p.m.
