July 3, 2006 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
Boston Cannons News Release
Boston, MA (July 3, 2006) - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced today that goalie Chris Garrity has been selected as the MLL Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Boston's 16-5 victory over the Philadelphia Barrage last Thursday in Philadelphia.
Garrity made 29 saves on 34 shots in a game that was called due to lightning with 13:00 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, leaving him just 4 saves short of the MLL all-time record of 33 saves in a game.
He was also named Bud Light MVP for his performance. It is the third time this season that Garrity has earned this honor.
The win was a huge victory for the Cannons, as Boston has now captured sole possession of first place with an overall record of 6-1. This was also Boston's second victory over the Barrage in as many weeks.
Garrity leads all MLL goalies with six wins this season. Through seven games, he has made 138 saves, with a .622 save percentage and an 11.72 goals-against-average.
This is Garrity's fourth season with the Cannons. In 2005, Garrity became the first goalie in MLL history to begin the season with a 5-0 record.
This season, Garrity was previously named MLL Defensive Player of the Week back in Week Two for his performance in Boston's 16-12 win over the Long Island Lizards on May 26. In that game, Garrity made a total of 26 saves and held the Lizards to only 2 goals in the first half.
Garrity will be in uniform for Team USA this Thursday, July 6, at the 2006 MLL All-Star Game at Boston University's Nickerson Field. This year, the MLL All-Stars will be competing against the United States Men's National Team. The game begins at 7:30PM.
The Cannons next regular season game will be on Saturday, July 8, in Baltimore versus the defending MLL Champion Baltimore Bayhawks. The Cannons next home game will be Saturday, July 22, versus the Rochester Rattlers.
