Game Day with Cape Breton

February 5, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Home Sweet Home

On Tuesday night, the MAINEiacs continued their strong ways at home, winning their seventh straight game at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee to start the 2011 calendar year. Lewiston used four different goal scorers to defeat the Shawinigan Cataractes 4-2, while Andrey Makarov made 37 saves between the pipes.

A Game Before the Snow

The MAINEiacs and Screaming Eagles have faced each other once this season, with Lewiston grabbing a 2-1 overtime win at Centre 200 on November 30th. Antoine Houde-Caron and Nick Parker scored in regulation, before Zach Evans-Renaud ended the game at the 4:16 mark of the extra session. Andrey Makarov's ten saves were good enough to beat Andrew Hayes, who suffered the loss, despite a 49-save performance.

January Treated him Well

Lewiston defenseman Sam Carrier had one of the best months of his career in January, recording three goals, ten assists, and 13 points in nine games. For his efforts, the Washington Capitals' draft pick was named the QMJHL's second star of the month. Carrier's honor came just one day after he was named the QMJHL's second star of the week for the week ending on January 30th.

Going Across the Country

Last season, Cape Breton netminder Andrew Hayes was one of two current QMJHL goaltenders (Jacob DeSerres of Saint John) in charge of leading the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings, who ultimately fell in the Memorial Cup championship game against the Windsor Spitfires. The Wheat Kings released Hayes at the beginning of this season, leading him to the Screaming Eagles. The 20-year old is 10-13-3 in his first season in the QMJHL, and has made at least 30 saves on nine different occasions. Hayes joined the MAINEiacs' Sam Carrier in the QMJHL's three stars of the week for the week ending on January 30th, earning the third star.

Head-to-Head

Tonight marks the 33rd all-time meeting between the MAINEiacs and Screaming Eagles, as well as the second and final contest between the two teams this season. Despite a 19-12 edge for Cape Breton with one tie, the all-time series has been extremely close. Six of the games have been decided in overtime, while one contest required a shootout. The Screaming Eagles have the lead in games played at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, winning nine to Lewiston's six.

Who to Watch for

During this winter's trade period, the Screaming Eagles acquired forward Denis Kindl from the Montreal Junior. In twelve games since joining Cape Breton, the Czech forward has ten goals, four assists, and 14 points. Kindl and Logan Shaw are tied for the team lead with 20 goals and 36 points each. The Screaming Eagles have one NHL draft pick on their roster, as defenseman Morgan Ellis was taken in the fourth round by the Montreal Canadiens this past summer.
