Independence Cup Game 6: The Mavericks and Thunder meet for the sixth time this season tonight at INTRUST Bank Arena. The ECHL's iteration of the Battle of Alberta will see its third clash in Wichita, the series split a game apiece in the Thunder's home barn. The Mavericks take a commanding 4-1 lead in the season series into tonight's divisional game.
Thunder Struck: The Mavericks have four players on the year operating at a point-per-game pace against Wichita this year, three expected to be in the lineup tonight - including the Dziurzynski brothers, David and Darian, and Jared VanWormer. Mason McDonald has also been strong against the Thunder, having a 1.93 GAA and .918 SVP in three appearances, all wins, versus Wichita this year.
Last Time in Wichita: Kansas City erased a 3-1 third-period deficit on Saturday the 17th, eventually winning in a shootout - Wichita's lone shootout loss of the year. Each of the Dziurzynski brothers lit the lamp in the contest - David tying the game at one apiece and Darian tying the game at three toward the end of regulation - and the elder sibling eventually netted the shootout winner.
Bouncing Back: The Mavericks come into tonight's game with a 2-0 record on the year following regulation losses, those games coming via a 7-2 win over Indy on Oct. 27 and a 4-3 shootout win over Wichita 10 days ago. Kansas City dropped a 3-2 contest at Tulsa on Sunday.
Player To Watch: Corey Durocher, who has recorded a point in each game he has played this year. The forward has provided a boost on the offensive end while helping with scoring depth, skating on the third line alongside Mike Panowyk and C.J. Eick. Durocher took 14 games to crack the Mavericks' lineup but has made a near-instant impact since finding his way onto the ice.
