Game Day: Hounds vs. Loudoun United FC
September 8, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
PITTSBURGH - After nearly a full month of road games and a week off, the Hounds are back at Highmark Stadium this Saturday to host Loudoun United FC and kick off a final six-game stretch with the best record in the USL Championship and the top spot in the Eastern Conference still very much up for grabs.
It will be the first home contest for the Hounds in 28 days, and it comes with the team clinging to a one-point lead over the Tampa Bay Rowdies for the top spot in the East. With a road trip to Tampa Bay lined up in the penultimate match of the season on Oct. 7, the Hounds' job now is to maintain or grow their advantage with three of four September matches at home.
The Hounds have been flawless at home against Loudoun, winning all five matches against the Northern Virginia side by a combined score of 12-0 since their first meeting in 2019. But Loudoun will come into the match knowing they can't sit back, as they will need at least four wins from their final six matches to have any shot at reaching the USL Championship Playoffs.
Two Hounds players, DZ Harmon (Liberia) and Jahmali Waite (Jamaica), are away with their national team for the international window. Waite's absence will mean either a third career start for Christian Garner, who last started in the team's U.S. Open Cup win over the Maryland Bobcats on April 25, or a professional debut for Jonathan Gomes. The goalkeeper not in the starting 11 will be in the squad as a substitute.
The first meeting between the teams this season was a tight one, with the Hounds taking a 1-0 victory in Leesburg, Va. on a 78th-minute goal by Arturo Ordóñez. The Hounds held a 10-6 edge in shots, but Loudoun had 54 percent of possession and forced a pair of first-half saves by Waite in a competitive contest.
Loudoun, meanwhile, will be without the services of ball-winning midfielder Houssou Landry, as the Ivorian serves a suspension for yellow card accumulation. The visitors should be close to full strength otherwise, which includes former Hounds striker Tommy Williamson, former Hounds Academy goalkeeper Dane Jacomen and newly acquired defender Harvey Neville, the 21-year-old son of former England international Phil Neville.
At the stadium, the Hounds will host Military Appreciation Night presented by 84 Lumber, recognizing service members from across the Armed Forces. As the presenting sponsor, 84 Lumber generously donated an allotment of tickets for servicemen and servicewomen, and the pre-game ceremonies will include a full color guard and ball delivery recognizing all the branches of the military.
The Tailgate Zone will open at 5 p.m., and gates will open at 6 p.m. for the match. Parking in the West Lot was already sold out as of Thursday, so fans who did not purchase their parking in advance are encouraged to arrive early and utilize the other lots around Station Square. Tickets for the game are still available through Ticketmaster and at the Highmark Stadium Box Office.
The match will be broadcast live on KDKA+, our newly rebranded local television partner now under the WPKD call letters. The station remains on Channel 19 over the air locally, and maintains its same spot on cable providers in the area. The game can also be streamed through the KDKA+ website locally, and like all Hounds match, it will be shown on ESPN+.
