Montreal Impact News Release
MONTREAL - Montreal Impact defender Gabriel Gervais will be honorary co-chair of a fundraising event organized by the Fondation Sport-Ãtudes. The Alliance Sport-Ãtudes Wine and Cheese night will take place Thursday, November 8, at the Maison de Radio-Canada. Gervais will co-chair the event with Mr. Luc Grenier, Sports Director for Radio-Canada.
"I have always combined sports and studies," said Gabriel Gervais. "Sports allowed me to receive a good education, since I had the opportunity to study at Syracuse University thanks to soccer. I think this combination encourages personal discipline and teamwork, for instance in defining common objectives. I believe it is important to study, even for a professional athlete."
Gervais, who played in 2007 his eighth season in the USL D1 and his sixth with the Impact, was nominated as finalist for the United Soccer Leagues First Division Defender of the Year award for a fifth consecutive year, after receiving this distinction in 2003, 2004 and 2006. Last season, the 31-year-old veteran helped Montreal post the second best defense in the league (21 goals allowed) and earned 14 regular-season shutouts. On September 20, Gervais became the fifth player in league history to be named for the sixth time to the first team, but the first to achieve this feat in six consecutive seasons.
Gabriel Gervais recently quit his engineering job at Saputo and started a full-time MBA at McGill University. He will play in 2008 the third season of a three-year deal with the Impact.
The mission of the Alliance Sport-Ãtudes is to offer adapted pedagogical services to high-level athletes from Quebec, who wish to pursue higher education at the collegiate and university levels. By enrolling in Alliance Sport-Ãtudes, the athlete-student can accommodate the demands of training, competition and studies.
