March 22, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, TX: March 22, 2004 â The Central Hockey League announced their weekly league-wide honors today and awarded Killer Bees forward Joe Guenther the Oakley CHL Player of the Week honor.
Guenther (gun-ther) a 6'0" 215-pound Buffalo, New York native registered 5 goals and 3 assists for 8 points in the three games played by the Bees last week. His week started off in Corpus Christi Thursday with a goal and an assist against the Rayz before returning home to the Dodge Arena and producing back-to-back three-point performances. The third year pro tallied a goal and two assists Friday in the Bees 9-3 victory against Austin and then closed the season with his second hat trick of the season with a three-goal performance Saturday night in a 5-3 win over San Angelo. Guenther ended the season tying his own franchise record with a four-game goal scoring streak. He registered 13 goals in his last 12 games and finished the season with a team-leading 26 goals. The 23 year-old also set the franchise record for fastest three goals in a game with his hat trick Saturday (22:45), and finished the season with franchise single-season records in game winning goals (6) and power play goals (9).
The award given to Guenther marks the second time a Killer Bees member has received an offensive honor, and it is his second of the season. Jeff Levy (three times) and Jacque Vezina are previous award winners on the Bees squad, but they were for goaltending honors. Guenther edged out some tough competition around the league to gain the honor, including fellow teammate Bill Newson, who also had eight points on the week with four goals and four assists. Newson had a franchise high and career best 5-point performance Friday, registering his first career hat trick and contributing two assists. Guenther's award also marks the second consecutive season the Bees have received individual honors on the final week of the season. Vezina claimed the Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week honors last season during the final week of regular season play.
"The Valley of Bees" will swarm the Dodge Arena again in October, as the Killer Bees are currently preparing for their third season. Season tickets and corporate opportunities are now available by calling the Killer Bees office at (956) 843-7825.
