Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA - With training camp set to open in less than a month, Fury FC GM and Head Coach Paul Dalglish made another important addition to his squad with the signing of defender Ramon Martin Del Campo, pending league and federation approval.
Del Campo, a versatile player that can play as a centre back or an outside back, comes to Ottawa after spending last season on loan with Puerto Rico FC in the NASL. In 2016, the 23-year-old featured in 16 Fall season games. He played 90 minutes in every game, picked up two assists, earned one Team of the Week nomination and won the Play of the Week on one occasion.
"Ramon is a hardworking, aggressive defender that has an endless desire to win the ball back," said Fury FC GM and Head Coach Paul Dalglish, who is currently in California for the MLS combine on scouting duties. "He's another player that has that ruthless desire to win and his profile suits the type of players that I want to work with. We bring in players that will help us entertain with hearth this season."
Del Campo signed his first professional contract with MLS prior to the 2015 Super Draft, but wasn't drafted, so he signed a two-year deal with Deportivo Saprissa in the Costa Rican Primera DivisiÃ"n. The following year, the 6-foot-3 defender was loaned to Puerto Rico FC.
"It's a privilege to have the opportunity to represent Canada's capital city," said Del Campo. "I believe in Paul's mission and vision of Ottawa. It's a team that should be competing for silverware every season and I wanted to be a part of this organization. I promise to battle every game to give the fans and the city a championship."
The Hermosillo, Mexico native grew up in San Diego and started playing for F.C. San Diego while also playing on the Bonita Vista High School varsity soccer team. He helped lead the team to the CIF San Diego Section Division II Championship.
From 2011 to 2014, Del Campo played four seasons of college soccer at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) and thanks to his outstanding performances he was rewarded with a call to the United States National U23 Team camp in August 2014, being one of the 19 players selected in the country.
During that summer, he signed with the San Jose Earthquakes' U23 PDL squad. After leading his club to an impressive record (7W-4D-3L) in its inaugural season, Del Campo was named among the finalists for the PDL's Young Player of the Year Award, while also being named to the All-PDL First Team and the All-Western Conference first team.
