Fury FC Putup Strong Performance, But Fall Just Short in Saint Louis
September 4, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Ottawa Fury FC News Release
A spirited effort fell just short for Ottawa Fury FC on Wednesday night as the club fell 1-0 to Saint Louis FC to kick off a three-game road trip.
Although they played until the final whistle and looked the better side for most of the match, Fury was defeated by a score of 1-0, thanks to a late goal by the hosts.
In a game where Ottawa had 61.5% of the ball possession and completed nearly 500 passes throughout the 90 minutes, Saint Louis' Tyler Blackwood scored the game's lone goal in the 80th minute, giving his side the victory.
STORYLINES
Ottawa Fury FC dominated the possession game in this match, with 61.5% against 38.5%.
Ottawa directed eight shots on goal, with one hitting the target.
This was Fury FC midfielder Wal Fall's first game back in Saint Louis, since he left the club this past offseason.
Fall was taken off in the 65th minute after a solid showing in front of his old fans and teammates.
Ottawa Fury FC goalkeeper Callum Irving kept the team in the game throughout the match, as he was a busy man, with 14 shots directed at him and four on target.
Ottawa's defense blocked a total of six shots during the 90 minutes.
POST-GAME COMMENTS
Head Coach Nikola Popovic
"We controlled play for almost all of the game. We had possession, we created chances, but we weren't able to score. It was disappointing that we made one mistake and ended up losing the game, but I think the team showed a good response from the last game. One bad bounce near the end made the difference. We have to be very proud of our players because we fought to the last play of the game and that's a good sign."
