Fury FC Fall to Louisville City at Home
July 28, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA - Ottawa Fury FC lost to Louisville City 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at TD Place Stadium. Three unanswered Louisville goals saw the visitors leave the nation's capital with all three points.
Fury FC, who featured nine Canadians throughout the 90 minutes, came into the match full of confidence. Ottawa won three of their last four games and were coming off a positive showing in the Canadian Championship.
Despite an even start to the match, Louisville got on the board first. Paolo DelPiccolo got his head on a corner kick and nodded the ball into the net in the 13th minute.
Ottawa had an excellent chance to respond ten minutes later. Tony Taylor beat three opposing defenders with a mazy dribble and thrashed a shot from a tight angle towards goal. The keeper was beaten, but Taylor's attempt skipped past the back post.
Taylor had another chance a few moments later when Jamar Dixon cut a ball back for the Panamanian at the penalty spot. Taylor was off-balance but did get a shot away, which was deflected out for a corner kick.
Maxime Crépeau was on his toes with the clock creeping towards halftime. Brian Ownby timed a forward run well, but Crépeau leaped out of his box and headed the ball away. The first half ended with Louisville up 1-0.
Louisville extended their lead to three with Paco Craig and Devon Williams finding the net within the first 15 minutes of the second half.
Substitute Jimmy-Shammar Sanon had the best chance of the second half for Ottawa. Dixon split the defence with a long ball up the field, but Sanon was hassled by a defender and the ball rolled to the goalkeeper.
Ottawa kept the tempo up and continued pressing the opposition's defence, but couldn't find their way through the Louisville backline and the visitors left Ottawa with the victory.
Fury FC will get a much-deserved six-day 'break' (their longest stretch without a fixture since the beginning of July) and will continue their push for the playoffs when they welcome the Tampa Bay Rowdies to TD Place on Friday, August 3 at 7:00 p.m.
POST-GAME COMMENTS
Head Coach Nikola Popovic
"A tough loss. I think the game in the first half was an even game, but one set play they were able to put in the net when we had I think three or four situations to put in the net and we didn't. And then the start of the second half, when we had just corrected this situation, a lack of concentration puts them at an advantage and it was difficult to recover. However, the ways these boys fought until the last seconds, believing that it's possible, even in injury time, to turn the game, we all should be proud of them."
"The only word is recovery. Recover, recover, recovery. What these boys did today [after the short window since the last match] at two in the afternoon, I think they are like superheroes to me. The way they fought, the way they put their heart in the game until the end, even with a difficult result, I think we all should be very proud of our players."
Goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau
"You see that every team has played around 25 games this year, including pre-season even more, so there's no excuse about this result today. Recovery is a part of it. Obviously it's difficult [with the heavy schedule] but there's no excuse about it, because the best teams in the world are playing every three days. Recovery will be important because we can't afford results like this anymore."
"In the East, from the second to the 10th position, it's a good race right now. Every team is tight, every team is good, we're in a league where every game is important and no one knows who will actually win. So it's important to bounce back and get our confidence back."
